Start writing your resume


Step 1:
Choose a job objective. This is the most important Step, as you can't create a great resume without it. You need to be able to clearly say what job you want so the reader knows how to evaluate your resume.

Step 2:
Find out what skills, knowledge, and experience are needed to do that target job. This step is as crucial as step 1 because if you don't know what's needed, you won't know what to emphasize and what to leave out.

Step 3:
Make a list of your strongest skills or abilities
(Say three or four skills) that make you a good candidate for the target job.

Step 4:
For each of your skills, think of several accomplishments from your work history to illustrate that skill.

Step 5:
Describe each accomplishment in a simple, powerful action statement that emphasizes results. Put the action words at or the beginning of the line, and be sure to mention specific, provable, successful results whenever possible.

Step 6:
Make a list of past jobs you've held, in chronological order.
List your most recent job first, then your earlier jobs. Give the dates of employment, the job titles, and the employers. Include any unpaid work (or education) that fills the gap or shows you have the skills for the job.

Step7:
Make a list of your training and education that's related to the new jobs you want. This could include correspondence courses, work-study programs, and relevant workshops.

Step8:
Choose a resume format that fits your situation.
Chronological if you're staying in the same filed and you have an unbroken employment history or functional if you're making a career change or you don't have a continuous record or paid employment.

Step9:
Arrange your action statement form step5 according to the format you chose.
If you chose a chronological format, place each action statement under the appropriate job title where the action happened.
Or…
If you chose a functional format, place each statement under a skill category.
Step10:
Summarize your key points at or near of the resume.
Make a brief list-say, four to six short lines – of key points that the new employer will need to know and that will make you look attractive and qualified for the new job.
This list should appear under a heading called "summary" or "Highlights". You could also name this section anything else that is descriptive, such as:

  • Summary of Qualifications
  • Highlights of Qualifications
  • Professional profile
  • Qualifications

As you focus on your job search, it is important that you know your own qualifications. Over the years you have developed many transferable skills form employment experience, coursework, extracurricular activities and your total life experiences.

Resume Content Areas


The following categories can be used as guideline to assist you in organizing a Professional resume. In constructing a rough draft, do not be concerned with length. Remember, categories my be omitted or added in later revisions.


Name, Address and telephone

Present yourself with the name you use in your personal and Business skills life (nickname should be avoided). Also, always include phone numbers with area codes. If you have an e-mail address, you might want to include that as well.


Objective

A brief description of your job search focus and professional goals. Do not be too specific in order to keep your options open.


Education

Indicate qualifications, degree, title, university name, and location. Starting date and graduation date (actual or anticipated if it is more than a year away). It is good to mention high GPA's and academic awards. Remember to highlight any coursework, or research that is relevant to your objective.


Work Experience

For each job give the position title, company name and location, start and end dates a short, specific description of tasks and responsibilities. If the company is not well known then briefly descried its business sector and operation.


Additional Information

This category is useful for displaying information that doesn't fit in any other category. Although interests, computer knowledge, and activities can be separate categories, especially if they are very strong, they can be listed here as well. Languages spoken can be placed here as well.


Interests

This is sometimes used to understand your "personality type".


Activities

Social or civil activities and fitness or sports activities, or hobbies that indicate how you spend your leisure time.


Computer Knowledge

If using computer is a necessary skill for the job you are seeking, be sure to highlight your knowledge in this section.


Languages Spoken

Include information about the languages you speak and write.


Honors and Leadership

H&L are also important categories to include. The employer is interested in the Business skills you have developed whether through volunteer or paid experiences. If you were elected for offices or committees. Mention it. Recognition and demonstration of leadership roles are valuable.


References
Be sure to ask individuals if they would be willing to be a reference for you prior to mentioning their name to prospective employers. Name of individuals are not usually listed on the Professional resume (unless there is a space available at the end), but you prepare a typed list of three references to provide at the interview. This list should include name, little, employer and business telephone numbers. You may also state at the bottom of your Professional resume "References furnished upon request."

A good resume is a self-marketing tool-a kind of personal advertisement-that shows off your skills and their values to a future employer.

The main purpose of a C.V./Resume is to help you get a job interview. So it start by naming your job target and then describes your skills, experience, and accomplishments as they relate to that job target.

What to include in your C.V.

I include all your jobs, however short-term they were, if you have little work experience or if you are very young.

Include all of the jobs that show experience related to your job objective even if they were short-term or unpaid.

Include jobs that are not particularly related to your current job goal if they help create a picture of stability, but don't describe them in detail.

You could include a period of training or education in your work history if that helps fill in the gap.


Want to leave out

If you have been working for several years, omit jobs that were very brief unless they are needed to show low how you developed your skills and you can also omit jobs that aren’t important to your new goal.

Difference between a C.V and a resume

You write a C.V when you want to Find a job. You send it to the company where you want to work. Your C.V contains information about your education, your Business skills, and your job experience.

C.V is the abbreviation for "Curriculum Vita", which means "the course of a life" in Latin. Usually the word C.V is used for a fresh graduate who dose not have much experience in work. Resume format

Functional Resume:
in which you are presenting your work experience by listing the most important skills you've used, and then describing a number of activities and accomplishments (drawn from all your jobs and life experiences) to document each of those skills.

Chronological Resume:
you are presenting your work experience in a traditional by-date job in a single paragraph, with the most recent job appearing first.

When you choose to be a doctor, an accountant, a builder, or a gardener there is some reason why you select that profession over another-the person has an expertise you want.
