Goal setting

Helpful hints

- As you make your plans, don't try to accomplish the impossible. If you work full-time, enrolling in two night courses in a new field may be unrealistic; start with one class so that the goals you set are achievable.

- Put your goals sheets in a "Job search Notebook" so that you'll have them for easy reference.

- Goals can, and should, be reviewed every six months (about the time when you should be setting new short-term goals ) and revised as needed. Writ this "review session" on your calendar. Examine your goals sheets to determine what other issues this may affect (type of experiential summer job you want, possible volunteer work you could do to learn more about the profession, ect.).

In brief: keep it simple

1. Setting career goals will provide a decision-making framework that will help in every aspect of your life.
2. Be very specific in both the goals you set and the steps that are necessary in order to reach them.
3. Be realistic about what you can achieve in a certain period of time.

How to set goals

Writing them down
The goals you establish should be written down – it's a good way to promise yourself you'll keep them:

- Take three pieces of paper, or use the work pages provided. On first, write down what you would kike to be doing in ten years (working as an accountant? Running your own design studio? Retraining and Finding a job in the computer industry? Having flexible work so that you can schedule around your children? )

Take several days to consider what you want your future to hold, and then settle on the one or two long-range career plans upon which you'd like to focus.

- Record on the second sheet what you would like to be doing in two years. Perhaps you'd like to have a management job within two years, or decided to work in a new filed. If your long-rang goal requires advanced education (such as going to business school or getting a Ph. D.), then on this sheet of paper you should note down what you need to be doing during the next two years to accomplish these long-rang goals.

- Short-term goals (six months) belong on your third sheet of paper. If you have to apply for master degree as part of your long – rang plan, then a short-term goal should include investigating universities and scholarships and taking the necessary entrance exams.

In ten years I would like to:
(Write what you see yourself doing and down the career goals you would like to have achieved.)

your goals

Most people spend more time on planning their vacation than on the career path they want to pursue.

By examining your goals today as well as those you have for 2, 5 and10 years from now, it will help you find what job is right for today as well as for the future.
You need to acknowledge your personal vision before you can expect of it to materialize. Then your Goal setting will become clear and you a decision-making framework that will help in every aspect of your life.

Be specific about each goal. If you want to be an accountant, consider you want to work as an auditor, as an accountant in a commercial or industrial firm or as an accountant in an accounting firm.

Many goals will require certain steps prior to achieving them, and you may need to do some research before knowing what's involved. If you don't know what is required to become a chartered accountant, then you will need to investigate the necessary to for this profession. Once you learn what those steps are, they will be tasks to write down on the "short-term Goals" section of your goal sheets.
